| Feels Good Man... |
[Nov. 6th, 2009|02:38 pm] |
I just got back from taking my third bio test. I'm pretty sure I did a lot better on this one than the last one, by virtue of two things:
1. Shorter time between tests. The professor actually honored that request! 2. I tried really hard to take better notes because studying from his powerpoints is damn near impossible even if all the information is there. If it's in my own words I'm more likely to get it.
Of course I won't know for sure until Monday. I'm really curious to see the class average/grade distribution for this one and see if everyone else improved as well. I honestly have no idea. All I know is I felt like I actually knew most of the matching/multiple choice answers rather than guessing on 70-80% of them like last time. I only did 5 out of 8 essays plus the bonus one (supposed to do 6) but they were all well thought out and took up the whole space. If I had to guess my grade I'd say at least a C without the curve (maybe more but with this bastard's penchant for trick questions I'm gonna be conservative)... which considering I had an F without the curve and a C with it on the last one, isn't too bad. |

Loud thunderstorm outside, raining hard and close to midnight: three reasons to turn off my editor. Document writing for another hour or two and finish up the encounters tomorrow. |

My fish died.
Laboratory animals aren't the healthiest creatures and he always looked sorta small and sickly. At least he got 2 more months of life than he would have otherwise.

| [ | mood |
| | grateful | ] | Seems I haven't made a journal entry in ever so long. Been very busy trying to make ends meet without going over the edge. I learned to knit, have been reading lots (currently reading Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson), and I participate in all free activities offered by my local library. Have been gardening, recently planted pansies in an empty flower box that used to hold strawberries.
May be participating in a clinical trial testing an oral contraceptive. Compensation is $6000, which I could really use to pay for the plumbing break in my home.
Have really been producing lots of items in knit and crochet, but haven't uploaded the pictures yet as I'm out of batteries for my camera! If it isn't one thing, it's another.
Received my last unemployment check today.
Wonder where the jobs are going to come from and how much they will pay.... |

[Nov. 5th, 2009|01:15 pm] |

The empire strikes backIn recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.
RSS feeds againIf you're addicted to , icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

| Fixes upon fixes |
[Nov. 5th, 2009|10:26 am] |
I uninstalled/reinstalled Gears of War, then went to play it and was told that I had a modified version of the .exe file. Ung... I barely remember that problem and had to go find a fix.
Found a fix, that turned out to be the wrong one that wanted me to log into Windows Gaming Live. I did, but found there was an error and I needed to download a patch. So a fix to get a fix. Found both and installed both, but it ate time.
Finally all the patches are done and I open my test levels, THEY OPENED! I lost about 20 min of work due to my multiple saves.
Tonight I put in all the gameplay and stop working just before midnight. |

| Excuse doesn't even look like a word anymore. |
[Nov. 5th, 2009|07:30 am] |
I finally got my happy ass back into SL today, something I've been intending to do, but procrastinating on, using the excuse that sense they're implementing the age verification thing, I can just not bother going back if all I'd be able to touch is the sandboxes. Besides, I don't know very many nice people whom aren't dirty little bastards on the side... Yes I know, lame excuses, but it worked seeing as how my father is the ultimate procrastinator. Nono, it's not important that he got back to me with a little thing like my SS#...
Well, then today I got my sister to get it from my mothers tax records. Took 20 minutes from asking and I had it. Kinda nice that I'm still friendly with my sister, has it's perks sometimes, anywho.
My 'welcome back' into SL was a little surprising, I didn't even have enough time to get my client working right before random strangers were trying to be friendly at me... And that persisted all day, until the climax of tonight's story was when some nice raccoon decided to try and make it a special first-night for me. Needless to say I panicked and, after some heavy cuddling, decided I was too exhausted to go anywhere with it tonight.
Gloves off, I'm terrified of all that kindness. Everyone I met acted like we were already friends, and for some reason, I couldn't handle it, I was freaking out. I had actually forgotten that there were these people in the world, what are they called, starts with an N... nnn... ni... nise? Nice? That doesn't look right, but okay... I actually forgot that anybody in the world could possibly be nice. My usual thought process is, if we have nothing in common then what's there to talk about? And then conversations just sorta happened, and I'm confused and frightened.
Of course I enjoyed it, but it's such a 180 from just being ignored by everybody. I'm used to people not giving a shit one way or the other about you so long as you aren't in their way, I kinda prepared myself to spend the entire day sitting idle and listening to the live streams while fiddling with scripts... End result? I got absolutely no scripting done today, I was too busy being the skiddish nerd, completely blown away by everything.
I really missed being a furry... It's going to be hard for me to get used to this, and even harder for me to not care about what Silk thinks about it. I've been paranoid about him looking over my shoulder today, which is uncharacteristic of me if only because I never do anything that's anything on the computer so I never had any reason to care before. Now I'm so used to being nothing, that while everybody compliments the avatar I made maybe 2 years ago, I can't even get past the part where they're ACTUALLY talking to me, like, without being forced to...
It feels like I've been a human all this time, lost touch with the furries entirely, and that it destroyed me... but when I think about it, maybe I needed that; I've always been searching for a second chance, to be able to start over with myself... Maybe my past won't catch up to me this time.
Addendum to the WoW PVP post; I found the higher level arenas focus more on fighting and territory control then on objectives, and on this subject, the hoard fares a LOT better. Also, after level 60 I've been finding lots of parties and potential friends. So assuming I've not just been abnormally lucky the last few days, I'm happy with the hoard again. |

| Again. |
[Nov. 5th, 2009|12:08 am] |

Once again Unreal just corrupted my level. AGAIN right at midnight. I've never had this happen before. This time I've got my levels copied to another location, but I'm afraid to open them right now. I'm going to wait to open it till after high noon tomorrow. If it won't read it when I get home from school tomorrow, then I'm dead. Lost some work but not much. |

So I just met someone who knows our suitemates. As I has suspected it's just one of them, Sarah, who's a gross bitch. The other one, Alyssa, hates her as much as Emma and I do. This is good to know. It's three against one. I tied a rope from the doorknob to emma's bedpost so she can't get in and fuck up our stuff. I'm glad I did as it has been confirmed that she really is that much of a psycho cunt. Posted via LiveJournal.app. |

Finished my first room in the test level. Open it up again and it crashes every time- something corrupted it. Lost today's work and have to start all over again. Why the hell not. |

I'm stuck in lab, really don't want to be here, and I fucking forgot to put on deodorant today because one of the bitches was in the shower when I woke up and it totally messed with my routine. Goddamn today is not my day. There is one good thing... I bought some granola cereal yesterday on a whim and it turned out to be really tasty. Posted via LiveJournal.app. |

| RBW |
[Nov. 2nd, 2009|09:27 pm] |
RBW was awesome this year. A big thank you to everyone who I hung out with during the con, and also a big thank you to the rest of the staff, it was awesome working with all of you. Staffing is stressful at times, but I think it can also be a lot of fun, and I'm glad I had plenty of people to ask questions to when I didn't know quite what the hell I was doing. ;)
Unfortunately Graafen and I seem to have caught some con crud. Hopefully it will go away soon. |

| Tube-talk: The EF80 |
[Nov. 2nd, 2009|06:37 pm] |
In the immediate aftermath of World War II, television was the Big Thing in consumer electronics. Early TVs had been complex, expensive and unreliable behemoths - the challenge was on to develop models that were both cheaper and more reliable so that viewing could be extended to the masses.
Up until the early-1950s the valves/tubes in UK TV receivers were designed to operate off low-voltage heater current - 4, 6.3 Volts being typical. To produce this, a heavy, bulky transformer was used. Apart from the weight of this, any leakage of its magnetic field was apt to deflect the cathode-ray-tube's beam: to 'solve' this involved either spacing the transformer a long way from the tube, or using extensive 'Mu-metal' magnetic shielding. Neither was really ideal, and both mitigated against producing compact, reliable, low-cost receivers: soon the search was on for a way to eliminate the transformer.
The obvious answer was to connect all the valves/tubes' heaters in series and then connect them across the raw incoming AC mains. But most tubes then on the market were not designed for this - and would soon short-out the heater to the cathode, with spectacular fireworks!
Another problem was that to amplify the broad-band video signal reliably and without introducing distortion requires valves that have specific characteristics: in particular a high input impedance and low input-capacitance as well as freedom from 'Miller Effect' to give stability.
So, manufacturers expended a lot of effort in developing RF/IF amplifiers that would work in series-heater strings with up to 250V between the heater and the cathode, while at the same time offering the high input impedance and broad-band amplification characteristics. Here we have Mullard's spectacular success in this niche:

The EF80
The whole issue of design of amplifiers for TV duty is expanded Here - with a detailed analysis of the construction of the EF80 Here. What you can see of an EF80 is largely the perforated-metal integral screening, which conceals the active electrodes from view. Either way, the EF80 truly deserves its place in the vacuum-tube pantheon, as one of the device which brought reliable, affordable TV to millions. |
